Crunch time
In only a few short days, the direction of our country will be decided. I cannot help but be afraid for us, our children and the world if there are 4 more years of W.
The intensity of political discussions I have had with friends and family has not been seen in election seasons past; no one is neutral this time. One friend said she has a visceral reaction to any Bush Cheney signs, fighting the urge to rip them into shreds.
I, too, find myself shaking my head in disbelief that there are still people who support the corruption, the lies, the idiocy of the current administration. Are they blind? Stupid? Or am I once again donning my "girl-from-the-wealthy-suburbs-and-elite-liberal-arts-college" glasses and choosing not to see their perspective? I have tried to educate myself on the arguments that the W. supporters make- but they all seem like paper tigers. To wit: here's a snippet from the W. website:
Bush Looks to New Term to Finish Important Work - 2 readings of this : is it that he couldn't finish his work in one term, or that he didn't do any important work, and was saving that for term #2?
Pres. Touts Nat'l Security Record of Reform & Results - when you click on this link on the W. site, it leads to a speech given in Florida- not ONE clear result listed, but lots of opportunities for the crowd to spontaneously interject the "4 more years" cheer.
The Economy Line: State Unemployment Rates Fall - but only after the rates spiked up during his administration
Mrs. Bush: Pres. Said He'd Reduce Taxes, He Did - but only in any meaningful way for his (and Dick's) cronies. Good to get your wife's support, though.
And so it goes. I am trying to stay optimistic. Having just spoken to relatives in by birth state (good old swing state of Ohio) they say it's never been so intense. They are bombarded by political ads and high-profile campaigners (the "Governator" just visited Columbus, OH) and there are already hints that it's not going to be a fairly administered election in Ohio or Florida, 2 key states.
To borrow a phrase (and nothing else) from the "compassionate conservatives"- Let us pray.
